Major Crypto Fraud-Arrest |
||||
Five Arrested in Major Crypto Fraud. The Metropolitan Police’s Economic Crime team have made five arrests in connection with a large-scale cryptocurrency investment fraud, leading to an appeal for potentially thousands of victims who may have collectively lost millions of pounds.
The ongoing investigation centres on a sophisticated scam using several websites to promote "pre-sale investment opportunities" in new, non-existent cryptocurrencies. Victims were falsely promised rapid and substantial returns that would double or more in value upon listing. Police enquiries indicate these tokens had no underlying value, and the "boiler room" operation was a sophisticated mechanism to defraud investors. If you have invested in a cryptocurrency opportunity through any of the following websites, or others promising similar unrealistic returns, you may be a victim of this scam: * DTX Exchange: dtxexchange.com * Intel Markets: intelmarkets.io * Cryptids: cryptidsgame.io * Algo Tech Trades: algotech.trade * Unilabs Finance: unilabs.finance
How to Protect Yourself from Crypto Scams: The Metropolitan Police and other financial watchdogs stress that cryptocurrency investments are high-risk and largely unregulated. The following steps are crucial for protecting your money: 1. Stop and Think: Spot the Red Flags Unrealistic Returns: If an investment promise returns that are "too good to be true”, like guaranteed doubling of your money overnight, it is almost certainly a scam. Legitimate investments always carry risk. Pressure to Act Fast: Fraudsters create a sense of urgency, claiming the deal is only available for a short time. A genuine financial professional will never pressure you to invest on the spot. Contacted Out of the Blue: Be wary of uninvited investment offers, especially through social media, email, or cold calls. Poorly Regulated: Most cryptocurrencies are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This means you have no access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if things go wrong. 2. Research and Verify: Check the FCA Register: Before committing to any financial investment or using a company, check the FCA Financial Services Register to confirm they are authorised. Be aware that the majority of direct crypto investment firms are NOT on this register. Search the FCA Warning List: The FCA maintains a list of firms operating without authorisation or that have been reported as scams. Check this list before proceeding. Independent Advice: Seek independent, accredited professional financial advice before making any significant investment decisions. Do not rely on advice from the company offering the investment. 3. Secure Your Assets: Secure Storage (Wallets): If you purchase cryptocurrency, move it off the exchange and into a secure personal wallet (preferably a hardware or "cold" wallet) and enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on all your accounts. Never Share Private Keys/Seed Phrases: Your private key or seed phrase is the master password to your funds. Never share it with anyone—not a "broker," a "support agent," or a "friend." Use Strong Passwords: Use long, unique passwords for every crypto-related account.
If you believe you have fallen victim to this or a similar crypto fraud: STOP Communication: Cease all contact with the suspected fraudsters immediately. Do not send them any more money or personal details. Contact Your Bank: Inform your bank immediately that you have been defrauded so they can try to halt any outgoing payments and secure your accounts. Report to Action Fraud: All fraud and cyber crime in the UK should be reported to the national reporting centre, Action Fraud. Online: Visit actionfraud.police.uk or By Phone: Call 0300 123 2040.
Reporting the crime helps the police build a national picture and target the criminal networks responsible.
The Metropolitan Police is committed to investigating serious financial crime and urges the public to remain vigilant and follow safety advice to avoid becoming the next victim. | ||||
